About Streaming Accounts
Streaming services track your viewing history, preferences, ratings, and watch time to power recommendation algorithms and content decisions. This includes Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Spotify, and many others. Deleting these accounts removes your viewing data but you lose access to purchased or rented content.
Why Delete Streaming Accounts?
Streaming companies collect detailed data about your entertainment preferences, watch times, and even when you pause or abandon content. This data is valuable for content recommendations and may be shared with content producers. Consider that downloaded content will become inaccessible, and any purchases may be lost depending on the service.
Data Retention Policies
Viewing history is typically deleted within 30 days of account closure. However, streaming services may retain anonymized viewing data for analytics. Subscription status changes may be recorded for billing history. Downloaded content becomes inaccessible immediately upon account deletion.
Tips for Streaming Account Deletion
- Cancel subscriptions before the next billing cycle to avoid extra charges
- Download any purchased content if the service allows (DRM permitting)
- Remove downloaded content from devices before deleting to free space
- Consider using profile deletion instead if sharing a family plan
- Check if your subscription includes any bundled benefits you'll lose
- For Netflix: Your viewing history helps recommendations but isn't essential to delete
- For Spotify: Downloaded playlists are lost, but liked songs can be exported first

To delete your account, go to your profile and click on the blue “Edit my profile” link to the right of your username. At the bottom right of the new page, you'll find a red “Delete my account” link. You will then receive an e-mail confirming your deletion request, followed by yet another e-mail indicating that your account will be deleted after 7 days.
